Family Fun

Visit Kinsmen Park (seasonal) with a picnic lunch.  Enjoy the rides, cool off in the splash pool, and play in the creative playground (younger children).  For indoor fun, try the Children’s Discovery Museum on the Saskatchewan (younger children); for the older children, challenge them to a little paintball at Merrill Dunes Adventure.

Velocity Raceway at Wilson’s Entertainment Park will test your driving skills. Challenge the kids to a game of mini-golf on their natural grass course or practice that swing on the driving range before heading out for a round of golf at one of Saskatoon’s challenging courses.  

Puzzle your way for an afternoon through The Maze (seasonal), a 12 - acre corn maze on Valley Road, or spend the afternoon at Saskatoon’s newest edition to family fun the water play feature at River Landing.

Look to the sky for a dazzling choreographed fireworks display at the PotashCorp Fireworks Festival (September long weekend). Complete with cultural demonstrations and live entertainment, this last festival of summer is one not to be missed!

Enjoy a wide array of animals native to Saskatchewan at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo

Stop at Saskatoon Bus Stop Refreshments to pick up lunch and then take a leisurely walk at River Landing and on the Meewasin Valley trails along the South Saskatchewan riverbank.  On the West side of the river you can see the landmark “Castle on the River”, the Delta Bessborough Hotel and the weir, where the pelicans return year after year.  On the East side of the river, explore the University of Saskatchewan.

Board the Saskatoon Princess or the Meewasin Queen (seasonal) docked behind the Mendel Art Gallery for a relaxing river cruise.

Lace up you’re hiking boots and hit the trails at Beaver Creek Conservation Area.  Don’t forget your binoculars; it’s a great bird watching spot!

A light dinner at the Berry Barn (seasonal) in a breathtaking garden-like setting overlooking the South Saskatchewan River. Don’t miss the Saskatoon Berry Pie!

Begin your day with a walk through history at the Western Development Museum.  History comes alive as you are transported through 100 years of pioneer history, and 1910 Boomtown.  Time for lunch?  Stop in at the Boomtown Café for prairie style cooking!

Enjoy entertaining, hands-on exhibits of Saskatoon’s history at the Meewasin Valley Centre. Participate in a walking tour of the downtown area which shows a variety of buildings, sculptures, and memorials

The city’s oldest business district is now a wonderful, eclectic shopping and dining destination. A Heritage Walk with Daisy of the historic Broadway District is most entertaining, and a great way to glimpse the flavour of a booming Saskatoon. 

One of the most beautiful campuses in North America, the University of Saskatchewan, is home to the Diefenbaker Canada Centre.  Learn about Canada’s 13th Prime Minister, John G. Diefenbaker.  Sign up for the campus tour, visit the many museums and galleries located on campus and enjoy the English Collegiate Gothic style greystone buildings.

Complete your day with an invigorating and awe-inspiring trip to Wanuskewin Heritage Park, where 6000 years of Northern Plains Indians history is celebrated.  Enjoy bannock and traditional First Nations fare overlooking a beautiful natural setting.

Winter Wonderland

View the spectacle of Canada’s largest outdoor drive through Christmas light display at the BHP Billiton Enchanted Forest Holiday Light Tour (end of November - mid January). Be filled with the wonders of the holiday season – presents, snowmen, reindeer, candy and more!

See what’s hot in holiday decorating at The Festival of Trees (end of November) at Western Development Museum. Lavishly decorated trees, wreaths, gingerbread houses are sure to inspire you.

To get a jump on your Christmas shopping be sure to stop in at Artisan, or the Sundog Arts & Entertainment Faire (end of November to the first weekend in December) to find that unique gift for that special person .

Celebrate Saskatoon’s cool culture at PotashCorp WinterShines (end of January – early February).  Enjoy live entertainment, an ice carving festival, cultural performances, cross country skiing, a hockey tournament and more! 

Take the kids skating at the Meewasin Rink (winter weather dependant) beside the Delta Bessborough Hotel.  Skate rentals available by donation.  Or if you want to relax a bit, enjoy a leisurely horse drawn cutter ride (weekends – weather permitting) in Kiwanis Memorial Park. 

Dress up warmly, and enjoy winter in Saskatoon!

The Trails of 1885

Drive on Highway #11 north of the city, stopping for sights at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

Follow the highway to Batoche National Historic Site. Once the centre of Métis settlement in Saskatchewan; Batoche served as the last battlefield in the Northwest Resistance of 1885. From Batoche, retrace you route back to Highway 11 and continue north to the Town of Duck Lake, the centre of an area of great importance in 1885 history. 

The Duck Lake Interpretive Centre is located just off Highway 11 and features artifacts pertaining to the 1885 Métis Resistance. From atop of the 80 foot tower, view the surrounding area in all directions.

From Duck Lake, go west on Highway 212 to Fort Carlton Provincial Park and step back in time to the original site of a Hudson’s Bay fur trading post that operated between 1810 and 1885. Visit the reconstructed palisade, provisions store, clerk’s quarter and tipi encampment. Interpreters guide visitors through these areas; campground and picnic area on site. 

Return totally satisfied from your day for a good night’s sleep at your favorite Saskatoon hotel.

Flashback

Fort Battleford established by the North West Mounted Police at the junction of the Battle and North Saskatchewan rivers, is an area rich in Indian and fur trade history. The Fort, constructed in 1876 played an important role in the settlement of the West. Today, you can tour original buildings and view artifacts depicting the life of the Mounties back then and the pivotal role they played in the settlement of the west.

Step back in time and experience the story of Saskatchewan's agricultural and rural life at the Western Development Museum - Heritage Farm and Village. This 100 acre outdoor site features a village with more than 30 homes and businesses representing the boom years of the 1920's. An original Saskatchewan Wheat Pool elevator built in 1928 and the 1913 railway station serve as reminders of early farm and grain marketing stories.
